peace, i’m tazeen ayub.

I’m an educator, multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, curator, and community organizer, focused on building authentic spaces of home rooted in love, spirituality, and deep reflection. I believe music is a sacred art form that can be used for storytelling, healing, solidarity, freedom, and social action. Through voice and instrumentation (guitar, Bansuri flute, swarmandal, tanpura, synth), I blend afro-indo sounds, weaving elements from “jazz”, funk, soul, Sufi chants, and Hindustani classical music- all of which I call Creative Improvised Sacred Music.

My projects are focused on the intersection between art, spirituality, and activism, and how the arts are a vehicle for liberation. I play in and manage several collectives, including LuFuki and Divine Providence, Tazeen & LuFuki, Astro Mystics Samaa Ensemble (South Asian avant-garde/experimental), and Autophysiopychic Millennium, an ensemble exploring the works of the late Dr. Yusef abd-Lateef. Between these ensembles, I have released four albums since 2018.

I hold a Master of Arts in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Wayne State University in Detroit. I am a tenured professor of Arabic at Henry Ford College in Dearborn, Michigan.

My Offerings

My Approach

When it comes to sonic exploration, my approach is curiosity. Artistic expression is the unfolding of one's inner self, uncovering one’s true voice through honesty and deep reflection. The music an artist plays from the heart is the most authentic and has liberatory power. My practice is about expressing myself, my ancestral histories and traditions, through emotional sonic storytelling, fusing the different elements of music that have outwardly and inwardly impacted me.
